Las nuevas guerras y el patrimonio cultural material: La destrucción de los bienes culturales en los conflictos del siglo XXI; el caso del Estado Islámico

Resumen

En los conflictos del siglo XXI, la destrucción selectiva del patrimonio cultural material se ha convertido en una estrategia de guerra. Esto se debe a las políticas identitarias de los actores violentos de las nuevas guerras y al importante papel del patrimonio cultural en la identidad colectiva. La destrucción sistemática de los bienes culturales contribuye a la homogeneización identitaria de las sociedades y, como limpieza cultural, representa una parte central de las estrategias de limpieza étnica. En las economías descentralizadas y globalizadas de estas nuevas guerras, el tráfico ilícito de antigüedades se ha convertido en una importante fuente de ingresos para los actores no estatales y especialmente para las organizaciones terroristas. Al mismo tiempo, esta actividad comercial contribuye a la limpieza cultural al robar el pasado a los pueblos afectados y acelerar la desintegración de las sociedades. El Estado Islámico aplicó en gran medida la estrategia de limpieza cultural en las zonas bajo su control en Siria e Iraq, y el tráfico ilícito de bienes culturales era una fuente de ingresos significativa en ese momento.  Además, la organización logró utilizar los medios de comunicación modernos para difundir propagandísticamente sus acciones destructivas al servicio de sus propósitos.
